In March 2006, China announced a tax on chopsticks. The tax is part of a measure to protect the country's deteriorating environment. China is the world's second largest consumer of wood (America being the biggest consumer). China uses 280 million cubic metres of timber annually.
China consumes the equivalent of 50 pairs of chopsticks per person per year. With China being the most populated country in the world, that's a lot of consumed wood; 1.3 million cubic metres of wood. They make 16 billion boxes of disposable choptsicks each year.
Businesses around the world can do their part to reduce the chopstick demand by using renewable ones and washing them, just as silverware, dishes and cups are washed. It's past time to quit being a disposable society. _________________ Kit Cassingham
